Whether you’re visiting Dar es Salaam for the first time or getting around every day, Met Road makes the city easy to move through. DART — known locally as Mwendokasi — is East Africa's first true bus rapid transit: dedicated median lanes, level boarding and pre-paid fares that cut a notorious multi-hour crawl to about 45 minutes.
The easiest way in from the airport is usually a ride-hailing app (Uber, Bolt or a local equivalent) — fixed prices, no haggling, and ideal with luggage. Licensed airport taxis are also available; always agree the fare before you set off.
Very affordable — single trips run roughly TZS 400–800 (about USD 0.18–0.37), a step above the old dala-dala minibuses but far quicker and more reliable.
Buses run around 19–20 hours a day, from roughly 04:30 to midnight, with both express and all-stops patterns on the trunk routes.
Tap a Mwendokasi smart card at the turnstile, or buy through the Mwendokasi app. Top up at station booths or with mobile money — M-Pesa, Airtel Money or Tigo-Pesa.
Phase 1 runs 20.9 km with 29 stations from Kimara to Kivukoni and Gerezani, carrying 165,000+ riders a day. Operated by UDA-RT under the LATRA regulator, with further phases under construction. It won international sustainable-transport awards in 2017 and 2018.
