Getting around Johannesburg

Whether you’re visiting Johannesburg for the first time or getting around every day, Met Road makes the city easy to move through. The Gautrain is South Africa's flagship rapid rail, linking Johannesburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo International Airport on a fast tag-in/tag-out network.

✈️ Arriving in Johannesburg

The easiest way in from the airport is usually a ride-hailing app (Uber, Bolt or a local equivalent) — fixed prices, no haggling, and ideal with luggage. Licensed airport taxis are also available; always agree the fare before you set off.

Fares

Distance-based with peak and off-peak pricing. A single Sandton–OR Tambo Airport trip is about R105–125. Fares are frozen with no increase for 2026, and off-peak travel is cheaper.

Operating hours

Daily from around 05:00 into the evening. Weekday peaks are 06:00–08:30 and 15:00–18:30; weekends and public holidays are priced as peak. Check the timetable for last-train times by station.

Tickets & payment

Pay-as-you-go with a Gautrain Card or a contactless bank card (minimum balance R32). Frequent commuters save with Weekly or Monthly train products, which load onto a Gautrain Card only.

Good to know

Sandton to OR Tambo Airport is 15 minutes; Pretoria to Joburg Park is 35. Rail users get R1/day station parking (to September 2026), and feeder buses connect nine of the ten stations. Operated by the Bombela Concession Company.

Fares and times change — always confirm with the Gautrain Management Agency before travelling. Last verified July 2026.
